# Group gift contribution split

Chipping in for a leaving present, a teacher's gift or a big birthday? Enter the price and the people, pick how to split it, and copy a ready-made message for the group chat.

## Three ways to split

- **Equal**: everyone pays the same.
- **Shares**: give each person a number of shares. A couple giving together might count as 2, a teenager as 0.5, and 0 leaves someone off the bill without deleting them.
- **Pay what you can**: set the most each person can afford, or leave it blank for no limit. People with a lower limit pay exactly that; everyone else splits the rest evenly. If the limits add up to less than the gift, the tool shows how much is missing.

## Exact to the cent

Everything is worked out in whole cents (or pence, or yen), never in rounded decimals, so the parts always add up to the total. When a split leaves a few cents over, they go one at a time to the people whose share was rounded down the most, using the largest remainder method; ties go to whoever is higher on the list. Add the card or delivery cost in its own box so it is shared too.

Ordering the present from a shop you have never used? Before everyone transfers money, look the shop up in WebTraceCheck's [free domain lookup](https://webtracecheck.com/dns-lookup) to see when its domain was registered. A very new domain on a big-discount shop is a reason to slow down.

## Questions

**Can I keep track of who has paid?**

Yes. Tick Paid next to each name and the bar shows how much has come in. Your list stays in this browser until you clear it.

**Which currency should I pick?**

The one you will pay the shop in. Yen and won have no smaller unit, so they split into whole amounts.

**Is this financial advice?**

No. It is a simple calculator for sharing a cost fairly among friends.
